Narcan Training
Wednesday November 20, 2024 1:00pm - 1:50pm EST
"According to the National Insitute on Drug Abuse, opioid overdose deaths continue to significantly increase each year, with more than 80,000 overdose deaths reported in 2021. Bystanders can act to prevent overdose deaths if they have access to NARCAN (naloxone HCI). Naloxone is an opioid antagonist - meaning that it binds to opioid receptors and can reverse an overdose from opioids, including heroin, fentanyl, and prescription opioid medications. Anyone can carry naloxone, give it to someone experiencing an overdose, and potentially save a life.

NARCAN training will be provided by Hope One, Morris County's mobile outreach vehicle for addiction, recovery, and mental health services. Participants will learn how to identify the symptoms of a potential overdose, how to deliver a dose of NARCAN, and steps to take until emergency responders arrive. All participants who complete the training will receive a NARCAN kit to take with them.

NARCAN training is mandatory for school nurses, athletic trainers, Coordinators of Athletics and Activities, building administrators, and members of the Emergency Response Team. It is highly recommended for coaches, advisors, and any staff members who routinely supervise students when a nurse is not present. All staff are invited to participate.

If after completing the training, any participant who is not comfortable with the idea of administering NARCAN at school or during school functions, may give their kit to the school nurse or take the kit home for personal use.
